We Often Ask for Our Own Bitter Pills
Because we have been born as human beings, we should pursue a spiritual path.
If we do not, we will have squandered this precious human body.
That would be like arriving at a treasure island brimming with gold but leaving empty-handed without taking any treasure.
What a pitiful waste that would be!
The sublime teaching of Buddhadharma is like a divine nectar that heals all ills.
When those who have the propensity listen to it and put it into practice, they can purify their afflictions of craving, anger, and delusion.
Each person experiences different phenomena as the result of past karma, and thus the suffering and happiness that arise from our individual karma are also as far apart as heaven and earth.
Even among a family of three who live in the same house and always eat together, each person’s experiences will be markedly different:
one might have auspicious dreams at night and enjoy good health,
while another might suffer from endless nightmares, physical discomfort, and mental unease.
No matter who they are or how intimately they are related, no two people can possibly share the same experience.
Where do these myriad and strange experiences of suffering and happiness ultimately come from?
They are not caused by external objects; they originate from our mind.
如果我们心中充满慈悲和信心,今生一定会安乐;
If our mind is filled with compassion and confidence, then we are sure to be happy and peaceful in this life.
If we also imbue our mind with immaculate wisdom, we will even attain perfect ultimate liberation.
But if we often generate unwholesome thoughts and create negative karma,
then what undoubtedly await us are the ferocious lower realms and intolerable pain and suffering.
Shakyamuni Buddha also pointed out in the sutras, “Mind is the source of all phenomena. Thus it is called the all-creating king.”
Why is it said to be “all-creating”?
It is because the mind can create pure nirvana, and it can also create impure samsara.
就是说,轮回中的一切,是不清净心的显现;
That is to say, all phenomena in samsara are manifestations of the impure mind;
nirvana and wisdom are manifestations of the pure mind.
If we observe further, we will discover that we cannot find anything substantial in external objects.
Thus, the sole root of purity and impurity is our own mind.
Since the mind can manifest all phenomena within samsara and nirvana,
那么,若将自己的心转到善法方面,安乐将会指日可待;
then if we turn our mind toward the virtuous Dharma, peace and happiness are within sight.
If we cannot tame our mind, and often commit unwholesome and harmful deeds under the power of the afflictions, then we are surely asking for our own bitter pills in the future.
